TVS-x72XU Series Introduction

The TVS-2472XU-RP is the flagship model of the TVS-x72XU-RP line from QNAP. This line consists of the TVS-872XU-i3-4G, TVS-872XU-RP-i3-4G, TVS-1272XU-RP-i3-4G, TVS-1672XU-RP-i3-8G, TVS-2472XU-RP-i5-8G, TVS-972XU-i3-4G, and TVS-972XU-RP-i3-4G, and each of these next-generation NAS models features an 8th-generation Intel Core processor and PCIe expandability. The TVS-2472XU-RP is available in the TVS-2472XU-RP-i5-8G submodel, which features an Intel i5 processor and 8 GB of RAM. This storage-oriented NAS features plenty of power to serve as a dedicated backup target, and its practically endless opportunities for expansion make it a highly versatile server solution. It includes 24 bays for increased storage capacity.

Extra Bays for Increased Storage

You'll never run out of storage space with the TVS-2472XU-RP. The 24 bays on this NAS are compatible with 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch SATA drives, so whether you want to run an all-HDD storage powerhouse or pick up the pace with SSDs, your options are endless. Each of the bays in the TVS-2472XU-RP can transfer data at 6Gbps, which means that your downtime to access or write data will be minimal.

Powerful i5 Processor

The TVS-2472XU-RP-i5-8G features the latest 8th-generation Intel i5-6500 hexacore processor. This processor operates at 3.0 GHz with bursts of up to 4.0 GHz, which means that it can handle practically any virtualization or backup task that you throw at it. While you might want to install a GPU to handle more intensive tasks, this solid processor can handle most of your NAS needs.

Up to 64 GB of RAM with Dual Channel Memory

The TVS-2472XU-RP-i5-8G only comes with 8 GB of RAM installed, but you can load up to 64 GB of DDR4 Long-DIMM RAM into this overpowered NAS. The TVS-2472XU-RP supports dual-channel memory, which means that it offers better performance when you install paired memory modules.

iSER Optimization with SmartNIC

The two 10GbE SFP+ ports featured with the TVS-2472XU-RP are controlled by a Mellanox ConnectX-4 Lx SmartNIC controller. With this technology, this NAS supports the iSER protocol, which allows data to bypass layers that would otherwise slow down the data transfer process. When you're using a VMware server that's also compatible with iSER, you can expect a 60 percent increase in IOPS and 50 percent decreased latency.

Endless Expansion with Five PCIe Slots

The other NAS units in the TVS-x72XU-RP family feature some degree of PCIe connectivity, but none of the other models in this line compare to the five PCIe ports provided by the TVS-2472XU-RP. Whether you want to increase your IOPS or improve your video processing ability, you have options at your fingertips that will make your NAS into even more of a powerhouse.

Improve IOPS with M.2 SSDs

If you choose to install one of QNAP's QM2 cards in your new NAS, you can enjoy much greater processing power. Whether you're hosting multiple virtualizations or you want your mail server to be speedier, providing your NAS with M.2 SSD capability is one of the best ways to boost your IOPS into the stratosphere.

Boost Video Processing with GPUs

Since the TVS-2472XU-RP features two PCIe 3.0 cards, you could conceivably install two high-end GPUs in your new NAS. Whether you're planning to share and edit 4K video with your team or you simply want to experience the increased processing power that GPUs offer, you can install even the longest GPU models in the TVS-2472XU-RP.

Expand Your Networking Potential

Once you've allocated your two PCIe 3.0 slots to demanding applications, you'll still have three PCIe 2.0 slots to apply to less data-driven uses. For instance, you might want to expand your gigabit or USB 3.0 capabilities with dedicated expansion cards, or you may even decide to make your NAS wireless with a Wi-Fi card.

Keep Track of up to 128 Channels with QVR Pro

With QVR Pro, you can keep track of up to 128 surveillance channels simultaneously. This advanced software allows you to switch between channels and record or edit surveillance footage. Since the TVS-2472XU-RP has an HDMI 2.0 port, you can even keep track of all of your surveillance data from the comfort of your server room without having to switch to a workstation.

Qtier Capability for Enhanced SSD Caching

Enable Qtier on your TVS-2472XU-RP unit to enjoy SSD auto-tiering, which optimizes your investment in SSDs for your new NAS. SSD caching improves IOPS and reduces latency, and it makes database and virtualization workflows more efficient. Qtier automatically keeps track of your input/output flow to create cache-like reserved spaces on your SSDs that improve performance.

Allocate Resources with Ease with Network & Virtual Switch

The Network & Virtual Switch application included with your TVS-2472XU-RP provides a visual interface that allows you to allocate virtual and physical resources to virtualizations and containers without the guesswork. This application improves your network management efficiency while simultaneously making it easier to deploy a new network.

Collaboration Is Easy with Qsync

It's easy to share files with Mac, Windows, and Linux computers with the TVS-2472XU-RP, and with the inbuilt Qsync function, it's even simple to share information stored on your server with mobile devices. You can use File Station to determine which files are available through Qsync, and collaborators will then be able to access any of these files from any device they use.

Rest Easy with Comprehensive Security Features

The TVS-2472XU-RP offers all of the security features you need to keep your data safe. For instance, this NAS comes with applications that allow you to set up encrypted access, IP blocking, and 2-step verification. Security Counselor, which is QNAP's intuitive security app, collects all of your security applications in one place for easy access.

Virtualization Station and Container Station for Simple Virtualization

QNAPs two virtualization programs, Container Station and Virtualization Station, make deploying virtual machines easy.

Connectivity

The TVS-2472XU-RP features four gigabit ethernet ports and two 10GbE ports managed by a Mellanox®ConnectX-4 Lx SmartNIC controller. This NAS unit is uniquely equipped to communicate with printers and external storage devices due to its two Type-C USB 3.1 ports and four Type-A USB 3.1 ports. The TVS-2472XU-RP also has one HDMI 2.0 port that supports 4K video at 60Hz, and it has two PCIe 3.0 expansion slots and three PCIe 2.0 expansion slots.

The TVS-872XU-i3-4G, TVS-872XU-RP-i3-4G, TVS-1272XU-RP-i3-4G, and TVS-1672XU-RP-i3-8G all feature similar connectivity options to the TVS-2472XU-RP, but they only have four PCIe slots each. The TVS-972XU-i3-4G and TVS-972XU-RP-i3-4G, on the other hand, have two 10GbE ports, two gigabit ports, one PCIe 3.0 slot, two Type-C USB 3.1 ports, two Type-A USB 3.1 ports, two Type-A USB 3.0 ports, and one HDMI 2.0 port each.

Application and Use Case

The TVS-2472XU-RP is ideal for medium-sized businesses and small-scale enterprise applications. Large-scale enterprises would benefit from more processing power than the TVS-2472XU-RP can offer, but if it is only used as a backup target and minimal virtualization host, this NAS can be used in enterprise applications of any scale. The main benefit of this NAS is its incredibly large drive array; the rack-mountable TVS-2472XU-RP can easily store all of the backup and virtualization data for an entire medium-sized business, and it is also compatible with the other QNAP NAS units in your rack. Businesses with less than 500 employees would do better selecting a smaller option from the TVS-x72XU-RP family.
